May beer is a polyphalic species, encountered throughout Europe and reported in all areas of our country. In Romania, it can be found in particular in the regions of the forest forests, near the oak and beech forests.

Identify the insect and the attack

The adult of this insect measures 20-25 mm in length. It has the head of the pronoun and the black diaper, with green reflections, while the elites are chestnuts and have four longitudinal tanne, sometimes with white pubescence. It has a black abdomen and is supplied with the sides with six white triangular spots.

The beer egg is white yellow, oval in shape and measures 1.5-2 mm in length.

The larva is popularly called «white worm» or «chickens» and is yellow-blue, with the protora and legs of a brown yellow color.

Adults appear at the end of April or early May. They have a Twilight flight, about 30 minutes. Scarabeo has a generation at 3-4 years and winters in the ground such as larva and/or adult. During the day, cockroaches are sheltered in the foliage of trees or shrubs and feed on their leaves. It gives eggs to the ground, preferably on light ground, at a depth of 10-20 cm, in groups of 20-40 each. After the 4-6 weeks larvae, which is in July or early August. The larvae feeds on finer roots and of the second year they begin to attack the thicker roots. At autumn, the larvae descend into the ground, at a depth of 40-80 cm, where they win.

The adults of this insect attack the leaves and, in some cases, the flowers and fruits in formation, in wood and grassy species. In the case of a strong attack, the leaves are completely destroyed, remaining only the main nerves. After the attack, the trees remain stubborn, lose the harvest, the wood is no longer mature and frost in winter. The larvae attack the roots of the grassy, ​​root, tuberculifer, bulbous and the woody roots of the seedlings in the nurseries of wine and fruit.

How to fight the May beer

For the struggle, it is advisable to perform deep autumn plows, repeatedly processing the ground in spring, since this helps to remove the larvae on the surface and expose them to time, as well as the action of the various predators.
